“Once a dick always a dick.”
ACT 1
Award winning director Nigel Dick was born in a military hospital
in the North of England and became an American citizen at around
the same time that Dubya thought it would be a great idea to
snag some Iraqi war-trophies for his gun cabinet. It is unlikely
that these events are linked in any way.
ACT 2
Dick has directed over 270 music videos, probably a record but
who’s counting, and over 20 films and documentaries. His
work has won 3 MTV awards, 3 MVPA awards, 2 Billboard awards
and countless other awards and nominations. What does it all
mean? “It means I have a large cardboard box in my basement
full of bits of wood with garish things stuck on the top of them,” he
explains.
Between directing gigs Dick would often sit in a Hollywood diner
reading Daily Variety and became fascinated by an out of work
actor who would regularly announce to the clientele that he’d
just come from an audition that he was sure he’d aced.
Clearly the man was dillusional and an idea for a screenplay
was born.
Deciding he needed a co-writer and, with a whole city of willing
candidates ready to buy him a soy latte for the chance, Dick
chose the guy whose head appeared on the cover of his first CD.
Why? “His head looked like my head. Two heads are better
than one. It’s bloody obvious isn’t it?”
ACT 3
Just a few short months later a dirty brown envelope containing
compromising photos of the addressee and a shiny new copy of
Callback started hitting desks all over Hollywood. Quite soon
it became clear blackmail was a most effective way of getting
a movie green-lit.
Callback will be in the can soon.
